Lot 116:
Description
This is a substantial collection of vintage song postcards, a popular genre of early 20th-century ephemera. These cards were typically produced in sets of three or four to illustrate the lyrics of contemporary sheet music. The lot features a mix of hand-tinted photographic styles and colour lithographs. The subject matter is deeply rooted in the sentimental and patriotic themes of the Edwardian period and the First World War, depicting soldiers in uniform, romantic couples in pastoral gardens, and domestic scenes of longing. Identifiable song titles in this collection include the famous 1916 wartime ballad Roses of Picardy, as well as Hello! My Dearie, Where the Black-Eyed Susans Grow (1917), Till the Sands of the Desert Grow Cold, When the Angelus is Ringing, God Send You Back to Me, and the hymn My God, My Father. The cards bear the imprints of prominent London music publishers such as B. Feldman and Co., Chappell and Co., Ltd., and Francis, Day and Hunter. Many of these series were manufactured by Bamforth and Co. of Holmfirth, England, who were the leading specialists in song card production. These items served as both affordable collectibles and a means of sharing popular culture through the post. Dimensions: Approximately 140 mm x 90 mm each.
