Lot 120:
Description
A fine example of a late Victorian or Edwardian mourning watch fob, likely of British or American origin. The piece features a large, rectangular step-cut purple stone, possibly amethyst or faceted glass, measuring approximately 15mm x 12mm. The stone is housed in an ornate gold-filled or gold-toned metal mount decorated with intricate scrolling and foliate motifs characteristic of the period. The fob is suspended from its original black grosgrain ribbon, a material traditionally associated with mourning jewellery. At the top, a gold-toned metal bar and wire hook clasp are present for attachment to a waistcoat or watch chain. While not a piece of official military issue, such personal effects were frequently carried by officers and soldiers as “sweetheart” tokens or mementos for lost family members during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
