Lot 136:
Description
A 20th-century Himalayan decorative wall plaque or mask, likely of Nepalese or Tibetan manufacture, depicting the wrathful Buddhist deity Mahakala or a protective Kirtimukha. The piece is executed in gilt-copper repoussé and is heavily embellished with a mosaic of coral and turquoise fragments. The deity is characterised by three bulging eyes rendered in bone, flaming eyebrows, and bared fangs. The figure wears an ornate scrolling foliate crown set with turquoise cabochons. The reverse reveals a hand-beaten copper surface with a simple wire loop for hanging. As a specialist in Russian art, I note that this item is of non-Russian origin and bears no Cyrillic signatures, hallmarks, or maker’s marks. It does not correspond to Imperial Russian, Soviet, or modern Russian production. Dimensions: Height approximately 15 cm.
