Description
A Chinese cast bronze tripod censer and cover, dating to the late Qing dynasty or Republic period. The globular body is decorated in high relief with a continuous scene of dragons amidst stylised clouds. The vessel is flanked by two elaborate S-curved zoomorphic handles and is supported by three cabriole legs, each headed by a lion mask and terminating in a paw foot. A band of key-fret pattern borders the rim. The domed, openwork cover is surmounted by a prominent dragon-form finial, designed to allow the passage of incense smoke. This form is often referred to as a Nine Dragon stove or censer, symbolising power and longevity. No reign marks or inscriptions are visible. Dimensions: Height approximately 11 cm; Width approximately 9 cm (estimated).
