Lot 163:
Description
This Chinese archaistic bronze libation cup dates to the late Qing Dynasty or Republic period. The vessel is cast in the form of a rhinoceros horn cup, featuring a deep, flared body and a spouted rim. The exterior is decorated in relief with traditional taotie masks set against a dense leiwen (thunder pattern) ground, reflecting the scholarly interest in ancient bronze forms during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The base is formed by a large, scaled dragon-like creature whose body curves upward to create a substantial handle. A smaller, slender chilong dragon is depicted climbing the opposite side of the handle, peering over the rim. The bronze exhibits a warm, dark brown patina with a smooth surface finish. No reign marks or inscriptions are present. Height: approximately 10 cm.
