Lot 166:
Description
A collection of three miniature novelty snuff boxes, each hand-carved from dark-toned hardwoods, likely mahogany, in the form of various footwear styles. The group includes examples with pointed and square toes, low heels, and one featuring incised linear decoration to the sides. Each piece is hollowed to the interior to serve as a container, with one example retaining a functional swiveling lid. These items are characteristic of 19th-century European folk art, often referred to as treen, and were popular as whimsical personal accessories. The wood exhibits a deep, polished patina developed through age and handling. No maker’s marks or signatures are present. Length: approximately 7 cm – 10 cm each.
