Description

A comprehensive collection of vintage commemorative lapel pins, badges, and a medallion, primarily documenting British trade union history and mid-20th-century advertising. The lot features significant examples from the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR) including a 75-year commemorative piece, the Amalgamated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF), the Union of Post Office Workers (UPW), and the Union of Communication Workers (UCW). Notable manufacturers include Thomas Fattorini of Birmingham, a renowned maker of regalia and jewellery. The collection also includes railway-themed pins such as the B.R. Britannia 4-6-2 and Errol Lonsdale locomotives. Advertising history is represented by a Bertie Bassett badge and a Robertson’s Golden Shred badge. A significant American piece is included: a Service Woman’s Roosevelt Memorial Association medallion produced by the Standard Emblem Co. of Providence, Rhode Island, featuring the profile of Theodore Roosevelt. The items are constructed from a variety of materials including vitreous enamel, gilt metal, and silver-tone alloys. Most pieces are accompanied by handwritten descriptive cards providing historical context and identifying the transition of unions, such as the UPW becoming the UCW in 1980. Medallion diameter approximately 25mm; pins range from 15mm to 45mm in width.
