Lot 186:
Description
A late 19th to early 20th-century mechanical writing desk of metamorphic design, constructed from solid light-coloured hardwoods, likely oak and beech, with a warm honey-coloured finish. The piece features a sophisticated multi-part hinged top that unfolds via a series of metal sliding mechanisms and brass hinges to reveal a tiered interior with a slanted writing surface and integrated brass-toned bale handles. The desk stands on four square-tapered legs joined by a simple apron with arched corner brackets, and the front face features a single utilitarian wooden handle. The interior components appear to be constructed of a secondary softwood such as pine. This design reflects the transition from primitive school furniture to more complex mechanical domestic pieces of the late Victorian period. Dimensions: H 82cm x W 76cm x D 51cm.
