Lot 189:
Description
This 19th-century sailor-made walking cane features an L-shaped handle crafted from a natural antler tine, likely deer or stag. The handle retains its characteristic weathered texture and natural colour, tapering to a smoothly rounded point. The distinctive shaft is constructed of numerous stacked shark vertebrae discs, a traditional nautical folk art technique that provides a unique, segmented appearance. These vertebrae are secured by an internal tension rod. A decorative collar of dark, polished material, possibly horn or ebony, sits below the handle, accented by lighter-toned spacers. The base terminates in a matching dark ferrule with a metal tip. There are no visible hallmarks or maker’s marks on the decorative elements. This is a solid-construction walking stick with no hidden system features. Length: 35.5 inches.
