Lot 196:
Description
Expertly modelled in the form of a tortoise shell and finished with a deep brown patina. The carapace is intricately decorated with cast and incised elements, including Chinese characters, I Ching trigrams (Bagua), and celestial dot-and-line diagrams representing traditional cosmological maps. The underside, or plastron, features a central incised square containing a cross-like motif, surrounded by further geometric punctate markings and linear patterns. Such objects are traditionally associated with Chinese divination practices and scholar’s desk culture, referencing the ancient tradition of plastromancy. The piece exhibits a pleasing weight and tactile quality. Dimensions unavailable.
