Description

This lot comprises a collection of four authentic British industrial mining tokens, historically utilised as colliery checks or tallies for personnel accounting and safety systems. The set includes one circular brass token from Welbeck Colliery, Nottinghamshire, featuring the stamped identification number 86. Additionally, there are three octagonal tokens from the National Coal Board (N.C.B.) Coventry Colliery, consisting of two brass specimens numbered 305 and 545, and one silver-toned white metal specimen numbered 220. Each piece is struck with the colliery name and a unique workman’s number, and each features a single factory-punched hole at the top for suspension on a tally board. These tokens serve as tangible artefacts of the British coal mining industry during the mid-to-late 20th century, specifically following the nationalisation of the mines in 1947.
