Lot 209:
Description
This lot features two vintage mechanical petrol lighters, representing both high-quality English manufacturing and novelty militaria design. The primary piece is a rectangular lift-arm pocket lighter produced by the brand Polo in England. The casing is finished in a silver-toned plating, likely chromium, featuring a classic engine-turned barleycorn pattern. The base is struck with the Polo manufacturer mark, a polo player icon, MADE IN ENGLAND, and PATENTED. This style of lift-arm mechanism was a hallmark of mid-century English smoking accessories, often associated with the Orlik company. The second item is a novelty brass lighter designed to replicate a rifle cartridge. This two-piece construction consists of a detachable bullet-shaped cap and a lower casing that serves as the fuel reservoir, housing the wick and striker assembly. This style of lighter gained popularity as trench art and military-themed souvenirs during the mid-20th century.
