Description
A highly significant and comprehensive seven-medal service group and research archive belonging to Acting Captain (Thomas) Mark Taylor, OBE, RN (1897–1979). This lot represents a distinguished career spanning both World Wars and service in both the Royal Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy. The medal group, professionally court-mounted, comprises: The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), Officer’s breast badge, Military Division (2nd type ribbon); 1914-15 Star; British War Medal 1914-20, rim-named to LIEUT. T. M. TAYLOR. R.N.; Victory Medal, rim-named to LIEUT. T. M. TAYLOR. R.N.; 1939-45 Star; Defence Medal; and War Medal 1939-45.
Taylor’s service history is extensively documented within the included research folder. He entered the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1910 and served as a Midshipman aboard the Eclipse-class cruiser HMS Minerva at the outbreak of the Great War. Notably, the archive identifies Taylor as a submariner, a specialist area of high interest to collectors. During the Second World War, Taylor transferred to the Royal New Zealand Navy, serving at HMNZS Cook and attaining the rank of Acting Captain by the end of the conflict.
