Description

This item is a miniature version of the Irish Service Medal (1917-1921), frequently referred to as the Black and Tan Medal. Authorised in 1941, it was awarded to veterans of the Irish Republican Army, Cumann na mBan, and the Irish Citizen Army for their roles in the struggle for independence. The obverse features a central medallion showing an Irish Volunteer in profile, wearing a slouch hat and trench coat while holding a rifle, surrounded by a sunburst design. The medal is suspended from a bi-colour green and orange ribbon and a bronze-toned bar decorated with Celtic knotwork. This miniature is unnamed, which is standard for this class of award. It provides a historical link to the foundation of the Irish State and the veterans who served during the 1917-1921 conflict.
