Description

A fine Victorian-period German hard-paste porcelain figural centrepiece or planter produced by the Sitzendorf factory. The central white-glazed vessel features a ruffled rim and is heavily encrusted with high-relief applied polychrome roses and foliage in the traditional Dresden style. The vessel is supported by three finely modelled winged cherubs (putti) adorned with pastel-coloured drapes, all set upon a shaped base finished with a moulded Greek key border and gilded trim. The underside bears an underglaze blue mark consisting of crossed hash lines characteristic of the Sitzendorf factory, alongside an indistinct impressed mark and the hand-painted numeral 14. This piece is a quintessential example of Thuringian porcelain production from the late 19th century, reflecting the ornate Rococo Revival aesthetic popular during the era. Height: approximately 9 inches.
