Description
A substantial Chinese brass charger dating to the late Qing Dynasty or early Republic period. The piece features intricate chased and embossed decoration, with the central well depicting a powerful five-clawed dragon writhing amidst stylised auspicious clouds. The broad rim is similarly decorated with dragons and clouds above a band of crashing waves, all contained within a classic key-fret border. The reverse is finished with a central medallion containing an apocryphal four-character mark in relief reading 宣德年製 (Xuande nian zhi – Made in the Xuande Reign), flanked by two dragons. The charger is fitted with a small mounting ring for display. Diameter: Approximately 14.5 inches (36.8 cm).
