Lot 62:
Description
A Chinese camphor wood chest of rectangular form, dating to the mid-20th century. The exterior is elaborately decorated with hand-carved relief panels. The lid features a central oval medallion depicting equestrian figures and attendants traversing a mountainous landscape populated with pagodas and pine trees. A similar figural scene is carved into the front panel, with both inset within traditional key-fret borders. The corners of the chest are further detailed with relief-carved auspicious motifs. The piece is secured with a traditional cloud-shaped metal latch. Camphor wood was highly favoured for its aromatic properties and natural ability to repel insects, making these chests popular for the storage of textiles. No reign marks or signatures are present. Dimensions: Approximately 30cm x 15cm x 15cm (Estimated based on form; exact measurements unavailable).
