Lot 84:
Description
A large Japanese bronze vase of archaic Chinese hu form, dating to the late Meiji or early Taisho period, circa 1900. The pear-shaped body is cast with multiple horizontal registers containing stylised phoenix or bird motifs executed in polychrome champleve enamels. The palette includes vibrant shades of turquoise, cobalt blue, yellow, pink, and white, all set against a dense cast leiwen (thunder pattern) ground. The neck is flanked by a pair of prominent elephant-head handles with trunks forming loops. The bronze exhibits a rich, dark chocolate-brown patina. The underside of the vase features a central circular inset, characteristic of Japanese bronze casting from this era. This piece reflects the late 19th-century Japanese aesthetic movement that drew heavy inspiration from ancient Chinese bronzes, adapted for the international export market. Height: approximately 14.5 inches (36.8 cm).
