Description
British School, 19th Century. A pair of bust-length profile silhouettes, likely executed in ink or cut paper on paper supports. One portrait depicts a woman in a bonnet, identified by a handwritten inscription as Margaret Whiting, inscribed ‘Margaret Whiting / Died 11 Mo 18. 1847 aged 63’. The companion silhouette depicts the Quaker minister Thomas Shillitoe, with an inscription reading ‘Thomas Shillitoe / Born 2. Mo: 15 1754. Died 6. Mo: 12 1836’. Both artworks are housed under glass in matching rectangular black-painted wooden frames featuring oval brass-trimmed openings and decorative brass acorn hangers.
