Description
A varied collection of vintage beer mats, coasters, and advertising ephemera, primarily dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. The assortment includes examples from British regional breweries and international brands. Notable items include a circular Hunt, Edmunds and Co Ltd mat for Banbury Cross Ale from Banbury, a Newcastle Golden Jubilee Ale mat commemorating the 1927-1977 period, and a large circular Dutch mat for Drie Hoefijzers Bier-Breda. Other brewery and beverage brands represented include Carlsberg Pilsner Lager, Bock Export Haecht, Bass, and Baby Bubbly Sparkling Perry. The collection also features tobacco-related advertising, such as a Park Drive Cigarettes mat priced at 10 for 4d and an Ogden’s Juggler Tobacco mat. Additional ephemera includes a Smirnoff Vodka shaped advertising mat and a competition card for One Grim Angel dated February 1989. The items are constructed from printed pulpboard and cardstock in various shapes, including circular, square with rounded corners, and die-cut novelty forms.
The items are spread across approximately 28 cm.
Condition report:
The collection is in used vintage condition consistent with age and functional use in a bar environment. Visible wear includes varying degrees of tea and beer staining, foxing, and surface discolouration to the pulpboard. Edges and corners show softening and rounding. Some printed graphics exhibit fading. The One Grim Angel card shows significant creasing and edge wear.
