Description

A vintage butterfly brooch of continental European origin, likely Italian, crafted from 800 silver. The brooch features a naturalistic representation of a butterfly with four outstretched wings. The wings are constructed using fine silver filigree wirework, displaying intricate scrolled and looped patterns contained within a solid wire frame. The central body is formed from coiled and structured wire, leading to two curved antennae. The reverse of the brooch is fitted with a horizontal pin bar and a simple C-clasp. A small rectangular stamp is located on the pin bar, bearing the characters 800, which denotes a silver fineness of 800 parts per 1000. This mark is characteristic of mid-20th century silver jewellery from the Mediterranean and continental European regions.

Condition report:

The brooch is in good vintage condition. There is significant tarnish and a dark patina across the metal surfaces, particularly visible on the body and antennae, which is consistent with its age. The delicate filigree wirework appears to be intact throughout, with no visible breaks, losses, or signs of previous repair. The pin mechanism and C-clasp remain functional.
