Lot 122:
Description
This lot features three decorative and functional items of military and nautical interest. The first item is a wall-hanging display consisting of two crossed decorative scimitars mounted on a shield-shaped wooden plaque covered in red felt. The swords feature curved, flared blades with etched foliate patterns on the flats and ornate cast white metal hilts with scrollwork crossguards and pommels. A central cast metal armorial crest displays a crowned shield flanked by animal supporters, possibly lions or griffins. The swords are secured with brown leather straps. The second item is a wall-mounted aneroid barometer housed within a decorative cast metal frame shaped as two crossed flintlock pistols. The frame is finished in a gilded or brass colour with black grips. The circular barometer dial is protected by glass and features markings for Stormy, Rain, Change, Fair, and Very Dry. The third item is a prismatic military-style compass in a black-finished metal case, resembling the British Mark III pattern. It includes a hinged lid with a circular sighting window and a liquid-filled internal card marked with cardinal directions and a 360-degree scale.
Plaque width: 19 inches.
Condition report:
All items show signs of age and previous display. The sword plaque exhibits tarnishing and surface oxidation to the white metal components, with some fading and dust on the felt backing. The barometer frame has light oxidation and surface wear; the movement is untested. The compass shows significant wear and paint loss to the exterior black finish along with surface scratches, although the liquid remains clear and the compass card appears functional.
