Description

This lot consists of two British brass and leather-bound telescopes. The first is a three-draw military signalling telescope, Telescope Signalling (G.S.) Mark IV pattern. It features patinated brass draw tubes and a main barrel bound in stitched brown leather. The leather is stamped with the markings TEL. SIG. (G.S.) MK IV, W. WATSON & SONS LTD LONDON 1917. The instrument is accompanied by its two sliding leather protective end caps and a separate two-part cylindrical leather carrying case. The second instrument is a single-draw naval Officer of the Watch telescope. It is constructed with a polished brass draw tube and fittings, with a stitched brown leather-bound main barrel. The brass draw tube is engraved with the text OFFICER OF THE WATCH. This model includes a sliding brass sunshade for the objective lens and a sliding cover for the eyepiece.

Condition report:

Both telescopes show signs of historical use and age. The leather binding on both instruments exhibits scuffing, darkening, and surface wear, though the stitching remains largely intact. The brass components of the signalling telescope show a heavy, authentic patina, while the naval telescope retains a bright polished finish to the exposed metal. The mechanical draw actions are functional on both telescopes. The lenses are present but have not been professionally tested for optical clarity or alignment; internal cleaning may be required. The leather carrying case for the signalling telescope shows significant wear and is missing its original shoulder strap.
