Lot 32:
Description
An Italian sterling silver relief plaque depicting a detailed perspective view of the Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) in Rome, leading up to the twin-towered church of Trinità dei Monti with the Sallustiano obelisk centrally positioned. The plaque is executed in high relief using the riempito technique, where a thin layer of sterling silver is formed over a weighted composite or resin core. Specific architectural details on the steps and surrounding buildings are highlighted with parcel-gilt or yellow-lacquered finishes. The piece is mounted within a simple, dark-stained wooden frame featuring a metal hanging loop at the top.
The silver bears several hallmarks within a small cartouche at the lower left: an oval containing 925 denoting sterling silver fineness, a square R indicating the riempito (filled) manufacturing process, and a rectangular provincial registration mark for Arezzo (AR). An additional adhesive label on the reverse confirms the metal as ARGENTO 925/1000.
Condition report:
The silver surface is in generally good condition, showing some minor areas of oxidation and yellowing, likely where a protective lacquer has aged. The wooden frame exhibits light surface scuffing and some minor wear to the stained finish, particularly at the corners and edges.
