Lot 129:
Description
An antique rolling parallel rule, a precision drafting instrument typically utilised by architects, cartographers, and navigators for drawing precise parallel lines. The instrument is constructed from a dark-stained material, likely ebonised hardwood, and features a fluted longitudinal handle for grip. The underside is fitted with two inset brass rollers that allow the rule to glide across a surface while maintaining its orientation. The end caps are also made of brass. No maker marks, brand names, or inscriptions are visible on the rule or the housing. The instrument is stored in its original fitted wooden case, which is finished with brass hinges and wire hook-and-eye fasteners.
Approximate length: 23 cm.
Condition report:
The rolling parallel rule is in good antique condition. The ebonised body shows minor surface scuffing and dust accumulation consistent with age and use. The brass rollers and end caps have developed a natural dark patina. The wooden case exhibits external scratches and general wear but remains structurally sound with all hardware present.
