Description

An antique railway signal hand lantern, likely dating from the late Victorian to early 20th century. The lamp is constructed with a cylindrical japanned (black painted) iron or steel body and features a prominent circular convex glass lens. The design includes a tiered, ventilated chimney top and a sturdy arched bail handle. On the sides of the body are two vertical mounting brackets, intended for slotting onto a vehicle or station mount. The interior contains a removable fuel reservoir and a brass burner assembly. The burner features a white ceramic chimney deflector bearing a circular black stamp. This mark is for Sherwoods Limited of Birmingham and reads SHERWOODS LIMITED around the outer edge, with the TRADE MARK SOUND and three stylized figures within the centre.

Height: Approximately 14 to 15 inches (excluding handle).

Condition report:

The lantern is in original, uncleaned condition. There is widespread surface oxidation and rust, particularly visible on the bail handle, base, and internal components. The japanned finish shows significant wear and paint loss throughout. The convex glass lens is intact but has a layer of surface dirt and grime. The ceramic burner component has some minor chipping at the top edge. The functional working condition of the wick-adjustment mechanism and reservoir has not been tested.
