Lot 117:
Description
This lot comprises three vintage men’s grooming and dressing accessories, primarily of British origin and dating from the mid-20th century. The first item is a fitted grooming and manicure set in a brown leatherette-clad case. The hinged lid contains an inset mirror, while the yellow fabric-lined base holds a selection of tools with faux tortoiseshell celluloid handles. The contents include an oval hairbrush featuring a silver-tone laurel wreath inlay, a matching comb, a nail file, and several small manicure implements. The second item is a portable travel clothes brush set. It is housed in a cylindrical brown leather case with a single buckle strap closure. The case contains two interlocking curved brushes with light-coloured natural or synthetic bristles. The third item is a men’s dressing and collar box manufactured by A. Knight & Co. Ltd, identified by the AKCO trade name. The rectangular brown case features a gold-tone ruched satin lining in the lid and a black velvet-lined base. The interior is divided into specific compartments, with two sections embossed in gold-tone lettering for LINKS and STUDS. The set includes a narrow clothes brush, a larger rectangular clothes brush, and a pre-tied black bow tie with a woven AKCO REGD label.
Grooming set case width: approx. 10 cm
Travel brush case width: approx. 10 cm
Dressing box width: approx. 23 cm.
Condition report:
The items exhibit wear consistent with age and use. The grooming set case shows external scuffing to the leatherette and discolouration to the internal lining. The travel leather case has surface scratches and general darkening of the hide. The AKCO dressing box shows significant wear to the exterior edges and corners, with the interior satin lid lining showing various frays and degradation. The brushes and accessories within the sets appear largely well-preserved.
