Description

A framed commemorative cross-stitch needlework sampler produced to mark the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary in 1935. The piece is worked in coloured threads on an even-weave linen ground. The central composition features a text-filled panel reading: SILVER JUBILEE OF THEIR MAJESTIES KING GEORGE V & QUEEN MARY. This central text is flanked by the commemorative dates 1910 and 1935. Above the text is a royal crown positioned over a cursive monogram GRI (George Rex Imperator), flanked by two red heraldic lions rampant. The lower register depicts a stylised representation of a royal residence, likely Buckingham Palace, guarded by two sentries in traditional red tunics and bearskin hats. The entire composition is enclosed within a decorative zigzag border interspersed with stylised floral and geometric motifs. The item is housed in a simple black-finished wooden frame under glass.

Frame Height: 17.5 inches (44.5 cm)

Frame Width: 13.5 inches (34.3 cm).

Condition report:

The sampler ground fabric shows overall age-toning and light uniform yellowing consistent with its age. The embroidery threads remain relatively bright and the colours are well-preserved. There is no significant evidence of moth damage or major staining to the textile. The black wooden frame has minor surface scuffs and wear to the finish. The reverse of the frame retains its original brown backing paper, which is significantly torn and fragile, revealing the wooden backboard and an age-worn wire hanger.
