Lot 170:
Description
An assortment of items of British sporting and historical interest. The collection includes a 19th-century style equestrian oil painting on board, depicting a bay horse held by a groom in a top hat and dark coat, alongside a jockey in red and white striped silks and yellow breeches. Two additional riders are positioned in the background against a low-horizon landscape. The work is housed in a dark-stained wooden frame with a gilded inner slip.
Also present is a Parisian street scene oil painting on board, showing figures and buildings with the Eiffel Tower in the distance, executed in an impasto style and set in a dark wooden frame.
The ephemera includes several parts of Cassell’s History of England, Empire Edition, published by Cassell & Co Ltd with illustrated paper covers. A historically significant original Post Office Telegraphs telegram is included, addressed to the Prince of Wales at Sandringham and signed by Sir Gordon Cumming, dated 24 January. Further items consist of a print of Queen Elizabeth II in ceremonial military attire with a horse, and a landscape print titled A Mill on the River Durdent – Normandy by S.A. Harding.
Condition report:
The equestrian painting shows widespread fine craquelure, surface grime, and a naturally aged varnish. The Parisian painting appears in generally good order with some surface dust. The Cassell’s publications exhibit toning, edgewear, and small tears to the paper covers. The telegram is in a fragile state with tattered edges, creases, foxing, and loss to the corners. The frames show minor scuffs and wear consistent with age.
