Lot 174:
Description
A collection of vintage mid-20th-century trade and cigarette card albums. The lot primarily comprises approximately ten landscape-format stapled paper wrapper albums published by Brooke Bond Tea Ltd. These albums were produced for collectors to house picture cards found in tea packets. The series represented include British Butterflies illustrated by Richard Ward; Wild Birds in Britain, Asian Wild Life, and Bird Portraits illustrated by C.F. Tunnicliffe; Wildlife in Danger by Peter Scott; Butterflies of the World; History of Aviation featuring fifty aircraft; Queen Elizabeth I – Queen Elizabeth II; Trees in Britain illustrated by Michael Youens; and Freshwater Fish illustrated by E.V. Petts.
Also included is a larger upright album for cigarette cards. This album contains corner-slotted cards bearing the printed text PLAYER’S CIGARETTES. One page features a series of Football Caricatures, including a card for A. Jackson, while the opposite page contains various other trade cards depicting sporting and instructional scenes. The Brooke Bond albums include cover prices of Sixpence or 6d where visible.
Approximate width of the collection as laid out: 34 inches.
Condition report:
The albums are in generally good condition for their age, exhibiting typical signs of handling and storage. The Brooke Bond albums show some edge wear, light creasing to the paper covers, and minor oxidation to the metal staples. The upright cigarette card album shows significant shelf wear to the covers and age-related toning to the internal pages. The cards in the larger album are held by corner slots. The completeness of the card sets within the Brooke Bond albums has not been verified. No major tearing or significant foxing is immediately apparent.
