Lot 205:
Description
A group of decorative items and boxes produced in the mid-20th century, primarily for the export market, exhibiting Chinese and Japanese stylistic influences. The collection includes a large rectangular wooden storage box with an adjustable brass latch and corner mounts, featuring an interior lined in blue silk fabric with woven bird and bamboo patterns. A smaller wooden chest features heavy brass corner reinforcements and a traditional Chinese brass pin latch, with the lid inset with a carved circular medallion of pale green stone depicting foliate motifs. Also present is a black lacquered jewellery box in the form of a grand piano, decorated with hand-painted landscape scenes and floral motifs; the interior contains a mirrored lid, a mechanical ballerina figure, and compartments lined in bright pink velvet. The lot further comprises a boxed presentation set of dark wood chopsticks with decorative bands and carved dragon rests in a yellow fabric-covered case, two individual wooden chopsticks in cream fabric sleeves with a carved circular stand, two mottled grey and white soapstone shallow dishes, and a single miniature embroidered fabric slipper.
Large wooden box: approx. 28 cm – 30 cm (W).
Condition report:
The items are in generally good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is visible wear and fraying to the interior silk lining of the large box and minor scuffing to the wooden and lacquered surfaces across the group. The functionality of the mechanical musical movement in the piano-shaped box has not been tested.
