Lot 96:
Description
A mid-20th-century gentleman’s shaving set manufactured by the Wilkinson Sword Co., London. This Empire model 7-day set consists of a plated safety razor handle and a full set of seven hollow-ground wedge blades. The interior lid features a gold-printed mark consisting of a royal crest above the text: BY APPOINTMENT TO THE LATE KING GEORGE V. WILKINSON SWORD CO MADE IN ENGLAND. This specific royal warrant indicates manufacture after 1936. A small black price tag is present on the right side of the interior, marked 21/-. The set is housed in a rectangular, nickel or chrome-plated metal case. The lid features engine-turned Art Deco geometric patterns with a central blank cartouche for engraving. The base of the case has a textured dimple pattern. The interior is lined in royal blue silk and velvet. The seven blades are held in a metal rack, with each blade individually engraved with a day of the week: MON, TUE, WED, THU, FRI, SAT, and SUN.
Case length: 11.5 cm.
Condition report:
The metal case is in good vintage condition with minor surface scratches and light tarnish consistent with age. The hinge and closure remain functional. The blue silk lining is generally bright but shows some fraying and small tears at the stress points and edges near the hinge. The plated components of the razor and blades show surface oxidation and tarnish, particularly in the recessed areas. The blades appear intact but would require professional cleaning and honing for use.
