Lot 122:
Description
An antique wooden storage chest, likely a miniature tool chest or apprentice piece, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The main body is constructed of oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners that have been treated to contrast with the wood grain. The lid and base moulding are made from a finer-grained hardwood, possibly mahogany, finished with a dark stain. The interior contains three removable rectangular wooden trays with butt-joint construction, resting on a single tier. The chest is fitted with two brass butt hinges and an inset brass lock with a circular brass escutcheon to the front. The interior and trays are made from a lighter secondary wood, likely pine. A single key is present. There are no maker’s marks or labels present on the item.
Width: 30.5 cm
Height: 15.2 cm
Depth: 18 cm.
Condition report:
The chest is in fair antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. There is significant surface scratching, finish loss, and staining across the lid. The front panel features a prominent dark mark or stain below the escutcheon. The interior shows minor dust and staining but remains structurally sound. The brass hardware shows a natural patina.
