Description

A collection of mid-20th century vanity powder compacts and related accessories, primarily constructed from gilt and silver-tone metals. The assortment displays a range of decorative techniques typical of the period, including engine-turning, guilloche and painted enamelling, petit-point embroidery, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Notable designs within the lot include an octagonal compact with a floral transfer signed G. Breeze, a silver-tone circular compact marked Mallory, and a square compact featuring geometric mother-of-pearl tile inlay. Other decorative motifs include ballet dancers on a blue ground, multi-coloured enamel and printed peacock designs, and a green enamelled compact with a central gilt-metal textured ring. Several items feature fine engine-turned starburst or linear patterns, and one gold-tone example is embellished with a wreath of pink and purple rhinestones. The collection includes several original fabric protective pouches in black and maroon.

Measurements of items range from approximately 5 cm to 10 cm in diameter or width.

Condition report:

The items are in varied vintage condition. Most examples show age-appropriate wear, including light surface scratches, minor tarnish to the metalwork, and some fading to printed or enamelled designs. One circular compact exhibits a heavily worn and corroded grey surface. Fabric pouches show light signs of use.
