Lot 142:
Description
This collection consists of an assortment of traditional British horse brasses and a single leather martingale strap. The martingale is crafted from a length of leather decorated with a series of small, heart-shaped brass bosses and terminates in a large, domed brass face-piece featuring a sunburst motif. The loose brasses are manufactured from cast and stamped brass and feature a variety of classic equestrian and heraldic designs. These include two horseshoe variants, one containing a horse head in profile and another with a triple-arched interior. Other motifs include a crown within a laurel wreath, a central dome with radiating sunbeams, a triple crescent moon design, and several animal figures such as a Pegasus, a leaping horse, and a depiction of St. George and the Dragon. One piece is a circular brass plate engraved with a landscape scene featuring a palm tree and a building. No maker marks or manufacturer stamps are visible on the pieces.
The individual brasses typically measure between 75 mm and 100 mm in diameter.
Condition report:
The collection is in aged, as-found condition. Several items, most notably the crown and the ornate triple horseshoe, exhibit heavy green verdigris and significant oxidation. The remaining brasses show varying degrees of surface tarnish and minor pitting. The leather martingale strap is stiff and aged, showing surface cracking and wear consistent with period use.
