Lot 19:
Description
A vintage wooden miniature souvenir cricket bat manufactured by Nicolls of Robertsbridge and Bushby. The blade features printed branding for the Crusader model and notes the firm was established in 1876. The bat is a commemorative piece for the M.C.C. (Marylebone Cricket Club) tour of Australia in 1954/5. The face of the bat displays a series of facsimile signatures from the touring squad members. Legible signatures include Captain Len Hutton, Denis Compton, Peter May, Brian Statham, Bill Edrich, Tom Graveney, Alec Bedser, Reg Simpson, Peter Loader, Vic Wilson, Johnny Wardle, Godfrey Evans, Jim Laker, Trevor Bailey, Frank Tyson, Bob Appleyard, Colin Cowdrey, and Keith Andrew. The handle is finished with a black textured rubber grip.
Total length: approximately 43 cm (17 inches).
Condition report:
The wooden blade exhibits a vertical split on the upper left shoulder. There is evidence of natural drying and ageing to the timber throughout. The printed text and signatures remain largely clear and legible, with minor surface wear consistent with age. The handle grip is intact but shows typical signs of degradation for a souvenir of this period.
