Description
A pair of late nineteenth-century German language volumes. The first volume is a biography of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart titled Mozart: Ein Künstlerleben by Ludwig Meinardus, published in Leipzig by Verlag von List and Francke, circa 1882. The work is an octavo bound in brown publisher cloth featuring elaborate gold and black embossing to the upper board and spine. It contains two steel-engraved portraits, including a frontispiece of Mozart behind a tissue guard. The title page bears a contemporary ink ownership inscription for Johann Zimmermann of Reval (modern-day Tallinn, Estonia). The second volume is a religious devotional titled Dein Wort – mein Lied: Ein Andachtsbuch für stille Stunden, compiled by Rudolf Stolzenburg and published in Bromberg and Leipzig by G. Abicht. Stolzenburg is identified on the title page as the Royal Seminary Director of Bromberg and School Counsellor. This volume is bound in red publisher cloth with gold linear borders and gilt lettering to the upper board. The title page contains pencil marginalia.
Condition report:
Both volumes exhibit moderate to heavy foxing throughout the internal leaves, particularly affecting the title pages and engravings. The cloth bindings show visible shelf wear, fading, and bumping to the corners and spine ends. The Mozart volume shows a slight separation at the front hinge. The devotional volume contains pencil calculations and notes in the margins of the title page.
