Lot 117:
Description
A framed offset lithographic print by George Bungarda, titled Luncheon of the Party Boat. This 1993 work is a parody of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s 1881 masterpiece Luncheon of the Boating Party, substituting the original subjects with iconic 20th-century film and music stars. The composition includes depictions of John Wayne, Judy Garland as Dorothy with Toto, Charlie Chaplin, Humphrey Bogart, W.C. Fields, Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s monster, Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe, and James Dean. The print features a facsimile signature Bungarda and the date 93 in the lower right corner of the image area. The lower margin bears the printed titles LUNCHEON OF THE PARTY BOAT and PAINTED BY GEORGE BUNGARDA. The work is presented behind glass in a dark, textured composite frame. This is a mass-produced open edition reproduction print with no visible individual numbering or hand-signature.
Condition report:
The frame exhibits multiple visible scuffs, chips, and scratches to the finish, most notably along the upper and left edges. The paper shows slight undulation beneath the glazing. The colours appear somewhat muted, which may be a characteristic of the printing or light fading over time. There is no visible evidence of foxing, staining, or water damage to the print surface.
