Description

A large mid-20th century decorative wall plaque manufactured by Fontanini in Italy. The piece features a central high-relief resin figurine of an 18th-century courtier, hand-painted and depicted sniffing a rose. The figure is dressed in a salmon-pink frock coat over an embroidered waistcoat and blue-grey breeches. The relief is mounted upon a ground of yellow crushed velvet, set within an ornate, pierce-carved style gilt frame with heavy scrollwork and foliate flourishes. A small gilded floral sprig is mounted above the figure. The reverse is finished with a hardboard backing and bears a central paper label marked Art. 179 and Modello Depositato. The frame reverse is stamped MADE IN ITALY and includes a small, illegible foil label at the bottom centre. A handwritten mark 8E is present at the top.
Height: 53 cm
Width: 53 cm.

Condition report:

The item is in good vintage condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, or repairs to the central high-relief figurine. The gilding on the frame is largely intact with only minor rubbing to some high points. The yellow velvet ground shows some vertical compression to the nap, which is typical for the material and age. The hardboard backing and hanging hardware are secure.
