Lot 163:
Description
Two archaistic Jade ceremonial daggers comprising a curved dagger and an inlaid short sword featuring stylised Chinese motifs. The curved dagger is carved from pale celadon-to-white Jade with natural russet and brown inclusions, featuring intricate openwork and relief carvings of a robed standing figure positioned next to a stylised dragon or mythical creature, and is pierced with four circular holes. The short sword is crafted from mottled dark green Jade with gilded geometric scrollwork, key-fret patterns, and stylised taotie masks to the blade. The hilt is carved in relief with an entwined serpentine design and zoomorphic masks, terminating in a lighter-coloured Jade pommel cap. Both pieces are produced in the archaistic style referencing ancient Chinese forms.
Length (Sword): 32 cm
Length (Curved Dagger): 22 cm.
Condition report:
The curved dagger is in generally good condition with no visible cracks or repairs (photo 2), showing minor surface wear and natural pitting consistent with the stone (photo 3). The short sword exhibits significant wear and loss to the gilded surface decoration (photo 6) and white surface residues in the carved recesses (photo 7). The blade edges show minor nibbles and light surface abrasions (photo 9).
