Lot 172:
Description
A brass and steel United States Model 1852 pattern Naval Officer sword comprising a straight single-edged blade with a single fuller and a spear point. The hilt features a brass half-basket guard with a pierced design of oak leaves and acorns, centred by an oval medallion depicting an eagle perched upon a fouled anchor surrounded by stars. The white grip is wrapped with twisted brass wire, terminating in a tiered pommel cap embossed with an eagle and stars. The sword is accompanied by a matching steel scabbard featuring a single carrying ring mounted on a raised band and a brass drag with a scalloped edge. A dark rectangular mark is present on the ricasso, though the characters are not legible.
Condition report:
The steel blade shows scattered surface oxidation and spotting throughout its length (photo 1). The brass hilt and pommel exhibit a mellowed golden patina with some minor tarnish in the recessed areas of the casting (photo 2). The wire wrapping on the grip remains tight and intact. The steel scabbard has surface dulling and light wear, particularly around the carrying ring and the drag (photo 1).
