Description

A brass pocket transit featuring a hexagonal case with a hinged lid containing a circular mirror and sighting aperture. The base houses a magnetic needle on a jewelled pivot, a 360-degree scale, and an internal clinometer. The instrument includes two spirit levels containing green fluid and a fold-out sighting arm attached to the exterior. The exterior and interior surfaces exhibit an aged finish with oxidation and surface tarnish throughout. The base is fitted with a black and brass plaque inscribed with a table of natural sines, a crown graphic, and the characters BRUNTON COMPASS, Wm., KELVIN & HUGHES, and LONDON 1917.

Condition report:

The brass case shows heavy surface tarnish and oxidation throughout both the exterior and interior (photo 1, 2). The spirit level vials are intact and contain fluid (photo 1). The internal mirror and glass cover show no visible cracks or damage. The magnetic needle and clinometer appear to move freely on their pivots. The sighting arm and hinges are functional.
