Lot 262:
Description
A hand-carved Wood mask in the West African tradition featuring the characteristic elongated features of Guro or Baule artistry. The mask is sculpted from a single block of dense dark wood with a matte, patinated surface. It exhibits a serene facial expression with almond-shaped pierced eyes, a slender nose, and a small mouth. The face is surmounted by an elaborate tiered headdress comprising a vertically ribbed central section and two large, inward-curving horns. The side of the face is bordered by a decorative carved line. The reverse is hollowed out with visible adze-tooling marks and features a single circular suspension hole drilled into the upper section. No maker’s marks or inscriptions are visible.
Height: 35.5 cm
Width: 21.5 cm.
Condition report:
A significant vertical drying crack is visible extending from the chin upwards through the right cheek (photo 1). Smaller age-related checking is present in the upper headdress and horn sections (photo 2). The surface shows general wear and an accumulation of dust in the recessed carved areas (photo 1). No evidence of modern repairs is visible.
