Lot 37:
Description
A Portuguese Regency copper 40 Reis coin featuring a laureate and draped bust of Prince Regent John facing right. The reverse displays the crowned Portuguese coat of arms. The piece is struck in a copper alloy and exhibits a dark brown patina consistent with long-term circulation. The obverse bears the inscription IOANNES D G PORT ET ALG P REGEN and the reverse is marked UTILITATI PUBLICAE.
Condition report:
The coin shows heavy circulation wear across both faces, with significant smoothing to the high points of the portrait, the central shield, and the surrounding legends (photos 1 and 2). A small area of green verdigris corrosion is visible at the lower edge of the obverse (photo 1). No legible date or mint mark is present.
