Description

A pair of Victorian cut paper silhouettes presented in original wood and gilt frames. The lot comprises one landscape-oriented portrait depicting a gentleman in a top hat facing a lady with her hair in a bun, and one portrait-oriented silhouette showing the profile of a young girl wearing an elaborate bonnet with large bows. Each silhouette is cut from black paper and mounted onto a cream-toned paper background. The reverse of each frame is backed with mid-19th-century newspaper clippings. The landscape frame features an ink-inscribed adhesive label reading Enock Hallam Esq Mrs Hannah Hallam Nottingham 1855. The portrait frame bears an adhesive label reading Miss Alicia Halliday Leicester 1855. The silhouettes are housed behind glass in black-painted wooden frames with gilded inner and outer borders and brass hanging loops to the top edges.

Width: 16.5 cm
Height: 19 cm.

Condition report:

Both frames exhibit surface wear and minor losses to the gilt finish along the edges (photo 1). The paper mounts show visible toning and scattered foxing throughout, particularly evident in the lower sections of the oval mounts (photo 1). The newspaper backings on the verso are discoloured with age and show some edge fraying and small losses (photo 2). The cut silhouettes appear intact with no visible tears or lifting.
