Lot 66:
Description
A vintage Linen wall hanging in the form of a long vertical bell pull, featuring hand-worked embroidery in cross-stitch and crewel techniques. The textile comprises four narrative vignettes depicting women in folk-style dress across different seasons. The top scene shows a figure in a yellow and purple floral gown tending to potted plants, accompanied by bluebirds. The second scene depicts a woman in a blue bonnet and dress carrying a flower basket. The third vignette shows a woman in green and yellow attire, while the final bottom scene illustrates a winter figure ice skating in a red and white striped skirt with a fur-trimmed coat and scarf. The embroidery is executed in a multi-coloured palette of cotton or wool threads on a natural-coloured coarse-weave ground. The piece is backed with a smooth tan-coloured lining fabric and mounted with ornate cast brass hardware at the top and bottom, featuring scrolled decorative motifs and a hanging ring. There are no maker marks or labels visible on the textile or hardware.
Width: 20.3 cm
Length: 91.4 cm.
Condition report:
The textile exhibits general darkening and yellowing to the linen ground consistent with age. There are several prominent horizontal creases across the width where the item has been stored folded (photo 1). The reverse lining shows moderate spotting and discolouration (photo 4). The brass hardware displays surface oxidation and a dark patina (photo 2). The embroidery appears intact with no significant thread loss or pulls visible.
