Lot 88:
Description
A soapstone hand carved chess set featuring two contrasting shades of cream and variegated reddish-pink stone. The collection comprises thirty-two stylized pieces, with the Kings and Queens exhibiting human facial features and the Knights carved as animal-like heads. The set is accompanied by two distinct playing surfaces: one square stone board with a cream border and inlaid alternating squares, and one circular stone board featuring a similar central inlaid grid. The pieces display variations in height and form consistent with manual carving and hand-tooling. The set is housed in a red cardboard box with gold-toned linear decoration. No markings, signatures, or labels are present on the boards or the individual pieces.
Condition report:
The set is complete with all thirty-two pieces and two boards. Surface wear is visible on the square board, including scattered dark spotting and staining to the cream-colored stone (photo 1). A significant horizontal crack is visible near the top of one reddish-pink piece (photo 3). Several pieces exhibit minor chips and nibbles to the edges, consistent with the soft nature of the stone.
