Lot 10:
Description
A set of four ink on paper silhouette artworks, each presented in an oval mount. The collection features various dance and acrobatic motifs, including a flamenco dancer with a fan, a balletic couple in an arabesque pose, a solo dancer in a dynamic leaping movement, and a figure in an expressive reaching posture. The silhouettes are executed in black ink against a light-toned paper ground, each set within a gold-painted rectangular mount. Every piece bears a small hand-painted monogram at the base of the image consisting of the characters B and V intertwined. The artworks are housed in matching black wooden frames with a gilded inner beaded edge. The versos are sealed with brown paper, showing significant age-related wear, with one frame featuring extensive clear plastic tape reinforcement and another bearing a metal hanging loop at the top.
Height: 23 cm.
Condition report:
The paper grounds show visible toning and scattered foxing throughout, most notably in the flamenco dancer and leaping figure silhouettes (photo 1). The gold-painted mounts exhibit minor surface wear and some areas of discoloration. The black wooden frames have scattered scuffs, nicks, and wear to the gilded beading, particularly at the corners. The paper backings are significantly aged, brittle, and torn across all four items; one frame has been repaired with extensive clear adhesive tape over the entire verso (photo 2).
