Description

A pair of commemorative and service medals comprising an Indian military Sangram Medal and a British municipal Great War peace medallion. The circular cupro-nickel Sangram Medal features the State Emblem of India flanked by Devanagari script and SANGRAM MEDAL on the obverse, with a rising sun motif over a wreath to the reverse, suspended from its original red and white striped ribbon. The circular British tribute medallion features the coat of arms for the Borough of Batley with the motto FLOREAT INDUSTRIA, inscribed PRESENTED BY ALD. D. STUBLEY MAYOR OF BATLEY • 1919 •, with the reverse depicting three lions passant below a scroll inscribed TO COMMEMORATE THE VICTORIOUS CONCLUSION OF THE GREAT WAR.


Condition report:

The Sangram Medal exhibits general surface wear, edge rubbing, light patination, a small circular indentation drill mark to the upper right field of the reverse (photo 2), and fraying to the top edges of the ribbon (photos 1 and 2). The Batley medallion shows extensive dark oxidisation, surface scratching, edge bruising, and is missing its original suspension ring from the pierced hole at the 12 o\'clock position (photos 1 and 2).
