Lot 97:
Description
An Ebony hand-carved sculptural group depicting a dramatic scene of an elephant being attacked by two lions. The central elephant is rendered in a defensive posture with its trunk raised high and one foreleg slightly lifted. One lion is perched atop the elephant’s back, biting into the trunk, while a second lion is positioned beneath the elephant’s belly. The sculpture is carved from a dense, dark hardwood with a polished finish and features inset white details for the elephant’s tusks, eyes, and toenails, and the lions’ eyes and teeth. The anatomical details of the animals, including the musculature and facial expressions, are deeply carved. Vertical drying cracks are visible in the grain of the wood, particularly on the elephant’s flank and rear. No maker’s marks or signatures are visible on the exterior of the piece.
Height: 11 inches
